What is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis: the movement of fresh water through a semipermeable membrane when pressure is applied to a solution (such as seawater) on one side of it. (Source: Merriam-Webster)

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a process designed to remove various impurities from water to make it potable or drinkable for people.

Reverse osmosis systems use your household’s water pressure to push your tap water through a semipermeable membrane, about the thickness of cellophane.

This membrane will only allow liquid to pass through it. As a result, it is able to catch contaminants, flush them away and leave your tap water clean and clear of most impurities.

How Does Reverse Osmosis Work?

kitchen sceneA reverse osmosis water filtration system will typically contain several different types of filters, designed to remove different compounds from your drinking water. These are the four most common filters used in a reverse osmosis system:

  • Sediment Filter This filter is the first pre-filtration stage of a reverse osmosis system. It is designed to remove suspended solids and particles from your tap water.
  • Carbon Filter — The second pre-filtration stage of a reverse osmosis system is the carbon filter, which is used to attract and remove chemical impurities like chlorine or VOCs.
  • Reverse Osmosis Membrane — This is the actual reverse osmosis membrane, which is used to filter out ions, larger molecules, bacteria, and more.
  • Polishing Filter — This filter is used for post-filtration and is designed to remove any lingering tastes or odours from the water.

The reverse osmosis filtration process is a highly-effective and convenient way to purify your drinking water supply. It doesn’t add to your home or your business’s energy consumption and it doesn’t collect the pollutants — they simply get flushed out of the system.

Common Contaminants in Your Water Supply

Most tap water in Canada will contain various chemical, mineral, and microbial contaminants. Some of these contaminants can be harmful in larger doses, while others are more of a nuisance. Drinking water in most of Ontario, and particularly the Kitchener-Waterloo area, is quite safe and most contaminants will be present in only trace amounts.

However, while small quantities of certain contaminants are not harmful in the short-term, they can be harmful if you continue drinking them for extended periods of time. This makes water filtration systems, like reverse osmosis, very important for both homeowners and business owners to purify their drinking water.

Some common tap water contaminants include:

  • Chlorine or fluoride added to drinking water at various treatment facilities.
  • Harmful bacteria or viruses from lakes or rivers, including cysts like Cryptosporidium or Giardia.
  • Metals from old pipes leaking in trace amounts, such as copper, iron, or lead.
  • Minerals that cause hard water scale (i.e. calcium, magnesium).
  • Trace amounts of toxic chemicals from various sources, including arsenic, barium, cadmium, chloride, chromium, nitrate, sulfate, and more.
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), used in consumer products that are disposed of improperly (i.e. gasoline, solvents).

Although it is unlikely that all of these contaminants will be present in your tap water, you don’t want to take any risks. A reverse osmosis filtration system will provide peace of mind for you, your family, and your business.
